CINEMA THEATRE, AMERICO MARAZZI 1935

The Cinema Theatre was built in 1934. Inaugurated in December 1935, it was the venue for cultural and recreational meetings in the border town. The project was entrusted to the well-known architect Americo Marazzi (1879-1963), who adopted the modern cinema-theatre typology with clear references to the Novecento current. The façade is clad in artificial stone, travertine type, and has monumental stylistic features conferred by the two long, double-height windows, the pilaster strips and the tympanum that concludes it. The Chiasso Cinema Theatre was refurbished at the beginning of the new millennium and is part of the Chiasso Cultural Centre, a public institution that presents a rich programme of performances, and therefore its consistent ‘re-functionalisation’ has made it possible to best preserve its typological characteristics.
