Mendrisio Regional Hospital Expansion, South Wing

Competition 2015
Construction 2022
The Mendrisio Hospital is located in an area of historical and landscape value in the municipality, characterised by the presence of 19th century buildings surrounded by large gardens. These include the first hospital building, Palazzo Turconi, which today houses the Academy of Architecture. The location of its extension, the South Wing, is intended primarily to reinforce this prestigious ensemble by defining a public space that offers quality to the surrounding buildings. Choices such as the portico on the ground floor and the characteristically designed façade reflect this desire for dialogue with the context. The new wing is divided into a floor dedicated to inpatient care and four levels with outpatient content. The distribution typology, organised around a central spine, guarantees a flexible response to different functional and operational requirements.
