Palazzo Botta Franscini (formerly Gottardo Bank)
Mario Botta, 1982-88
The imposing ex Banca del Gottardo headquarters in Lugano, designed by Mario Botta (competition 1982, construction 1984-88, inaugurated in November 1988), is divided into four volumes punctuated by connecting towers and internal courtyards, overlooking Viale Stefano Franscini, the dividing line between the historic center and the modern expansion. The facades are clad in red and gray granite; the body of the building reflects Botta's predilection for mass, materiality, and the relationship with the urban space.
Today the building is owned by EFG Bank AG.
