TITA CARLONI, 1967

The Pinacoteca cantonale Giovanni Züst Cantonal is the main museum dedicated to ancient art in Ticino. It is housed in the former parish house in Rancate, which was renovated in 1967 by Tita Carloni to accommodate the collection of paintings by Ticino artists donated to the Canton by Giovanni Züst. A leading figure in modern architecture in Ticino, Carloni increased the height of the existing building to create a large room lit by zenithal light. The project, which combined modern forms with local building traditions, included the addition of a new wing consisting of a double-height exhibition space and the caretaker's apartment. In 2024, the Pessina studio in Zurich won an architectural competition for the renovation and expansion of the art gallery.
