Restoration by Architetti Tibiletti Associati, ca. 1855, restoration 2018 - 2025

The project for the Caffè Federale stems from the desire to restore to the historic building a central role in the urban fabric of Lugano. The intervention, the result of a careful restoration and redevelopment, enhances the original architectural elements while integrating contemporary and functional solutions. Particular attention was paid to the dialogue with the public space of the square outside, while the interior design reflects the historic identity of the place through the use of light and authentic materials. Original elements, such as artworks, painted timber ceilings and wood panelling, as well as quality architectural interventions from the 1970s, which bear witness to the historical layering of the building, have also been kept and enhanced.

A central role is given to the new skylight which, with its natural light, redraws the interior spaces and highlights the grand staircase, turning it into the distribution and perceptual fulcrum of the building. The internal organisation has been completely rethought to meet the needs of comfort and functionality: the ground floor houses the bar/restaurant, while on the upper floors there are two dining rooms of 25 seats each, a main kitchen and a support kitchen. The third floor accommodates the staff changing rooms and a reorganised office. The intervention thus restores to the building its role as a reference point in the social and cultural life of the city.
