Casa Hollerer in Avegno
Pietro Stolz Architect, 1965–1966
Located above the village centre of Avegno, the house can be reached by parking next to the Ristorante Stazione and walking up Strada ad Zöra. After the first junction, the house is on the right.
Casa Höllerer is the very first single-family house designed by Pietro Stolz, commissioned by Mr and Mrs Höllerer. Built between 1965 and 1966, the house already contains all the stylistic elements of an architecture that would come to define Stolz’s work: a language based on simple, minimal structural elements and characterised by solutions drawing on modernism, but also, with a postmodern approach, on vernacular architecture and classicism. What makes the house exceptional is that practically nothing has been altered. Despite the signs of time, it remains a remarkable example of considerable historical interest. In this and other houses from the same period, influences from Aldo Rossi can be perceived, as well as from Pauli, who was an assistant to one of Stolz’s professors and later became his friend during his studies at ETH Zurich.
