Casa Le Terrazze in Ruvigliana
Giraudi Wettstein Architetti, 2004
The building is situated on a protruding spur of Monte Brè, offering an endless, breathtaking panorama. The triangular geometry of the site defines its form. The dwelling occupies the entire protrusion and follows the natural curvature of the property.
The central theme of this villa on the outskirts of Lugano is a sequence of horizontal levels: overlapping terraces that alternately align with or contrast against one another.
The structure unfolds across several layers. A series of staircases leads from the entrance, situated on the lower level, up to the upper floors, which become progressively more open and light-filled. Varying intensities of light and changing views characterise the ascent. At the tip of the triangle, the library, bathed in midday sunshine, becomes a place of retreat, offering shelter from the surrounding landscape.
In contrast to the steep downward slope, the building rises confidently from the ground. Ascending concrete walls emphasise its vertical continuity and structural force.
The use of concrete—liquid stone assuming a rigid form—allows the terraces to follow their curved geometry and reinforces the building’s architectural expression.
