Collegio Papio – New Canteen and Borromean Garden
New Canteen by Giraudi Radczuweit Architects, 2011–2021; restoration of the Borromean garden by Dionea SA / Giraudi Radczuweit Architects / Eng. S. Pawlowsky, 2021–2024
The project for the new canteen arose from the need to expand Collegio Papio, within a monumental complex on the edge of Ascona’s historic centre.
The new function occupies a residual space that had become obsolete over time: a void between stone walls with an unusual geometric form, suited to accommodating a communal space beside the historic garden. The void is covered, respecting the existing perimeter, and becomes a solid volume.
The project is primarily conceived as the development of a fifth façade: a series of inclined planes alternating between transparency and opacity. The roof is composed of a sequence of triangular volumes that vary in size according to the wedge-shaped form of the site, harmonising with the roofs of the historic centre and the surrounding landscape, while quietly extending the interior space.
