SUPSI university campus
BCMA Architectes, 2021
The SUPSI (University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland) campus building in Mendrisio—home to the SUPSI Department of Environment, Construction, and Design—stands next to the railway, within the context of an evolving industrial site. The project's cross-section responds to the various surrounding volumes, recognizing the orientation of the tracks as a key element in the layout.
Designed by BCMA Architectes (Bassi Carella Marello Architectes), it is assembled according to the principles of prefabrication, making materiality a central aspect of the construction. Its red color evokes terracotta and, at the same time, an urban concept of interiority. The heart of the building is a ramp that provides access to the various functions: almost "an Alpine path, rather than a road or a highway, which elevates the spirit in the learning process typical of a school" (Andrea Bassi). A concrete architecture, characterized by large transparencies, which allows those who use it to have both a visual and a physical exchange. A sort of large red "covered plaza."
The Department of Environment, Construction and Design at SUPSI combines technical and design dimensions in education, research, and service provision. Among its objectives is to promote interprofessional and transdisciplinary cultures and practices, ensuring a contribution to the sustainable management and enhancement of the natural and built heritage of its territory. The campus hosts classes for students in eight Bachelor's and Master's degree programs (from architecture to interior design, from civil engineering to conservation and restoration, from visual communication to interaction design) and over 100 courses for those pursuing further specialization while already practicing a profession. Five institutes and their laboratories are also located on the campus: they conduct research and services in the fields of design, materials and construction, sustainability applied to the built environment, earth sciences, and microbiology.
